The history of rohm and haas.
Rohm and Haas was founded in Esslingen, Germany in 1907 by Dr. Otto Rohm and Mr Otto Haas. On Septemeber 1 1909, Otto Haas moved to Philadelphia in America and began to run the business from an office on Front Street, while Otto Rohm stayed in Germany to run the company that eventually became Rohm GmbH.
During World War 1 the company rapidly grew, because of their invention of a sythetic substitute that
was used for bating leather. Large quantities of leather was needed for the war which was used for belts and saddles. As World War II began the company manufactured Plexiglas acrylic, a transparent plastic that was needed for aircraft canopies. They sold this part of the business in 1998 to Elf Atochem which is now called Arkema. Rohm and Haas moved the headquaters in 1965, from Washington Square to a new building in Independence Mall. In 1999 Rohm and Haas acquired the Morton Salt company.
Rohm and Haas have created many main products that are specialty materials, advanced chemistry that allows end-use products to have a particular characteristic. For example, water based paints, low-odor,sunscreens with greater SPF or more powerful semiconductor chips.
On July 10, 2008 the company had announced that it was being brought by Dow Chemical Company for $18.8 billion.
The company will still be doing business under it name and will be still located in Philadelphia headquaters.
